Wingspan’s Justin Huang featured in The Family Office Professional on how families are putting AI to work
Family offices are not known for moving fast on new technology, but artificial intelligence is starting to change that. In a piece for The Family Office Professional, Justin Huang, Director of Family Office Advisory at Wingspan, made the case for where families should begin: reporting.
Most reporting tools are hard to use unless someone becomes a power user, and for a single family that effort rarely pays off. The work that remains is manual, and it is heaviest exactly where families need clarity most.
“There is still an element of manual labor, particularly as it relates to reporting on alternative investments,” Justin noted. “It’s a perfect opportunity for AI to automate it.”
If reporting is the clearest place to start, it is far from the only one. The practitioners interviewed pointed to a range of everyday tasks where AI is already proving useful, and the pattern was consistent. Pick something specific and tedious, then try it.
Several described leaning on AI for the accounting function, including the month-end close. Others used it to compare contract language, pressure-test LP agreements, and support due diligence. One office built Salesforce automations it did not have the in-house expertise to write. Another fed years of profit-and-loss statements into an enterprise tool to model future cash flow, turning hours of work into a fraction of the time. Even routine work like converting files between formats and organizing travel came up as low-stakes places to build confidence.
None of these are sweeping transformations. They are small, concrete wins, and that is the point. Progress came not from a grand strategy but from picking one task and starting.
That is the practical takeaway for families wondering where to begin. Don’t wait for the perfect plan. Find the process that quietly eats hours every month, often something in reporting, and start there.
